How Ayurveda Found Me
Upon reflection, my journey has been one of profound transformation. At a vulnerable juncture, when my water broke unexpectedly during my fifth month of pregnancy, I was in a state of panic. Despite my previous experience of a healthy pregnancy in my twenties, this loss, which society often shies away from discussing, left me utterly devastated and isolated. Striving to embody the archetype of a "strong woman," I attempted to suppress my grief and move forward, yet it persisted, surfacing at unexpected moments. The birth of my sons were marked by challenging pregnancies and health concerns, propelling me on a quest guided by a mother’s instinct. Amidst grappling with medical procedures, skin and digestive issues, and the removal of a painful uterine fibroid, Ayurveda found me. Determined not to spend the rest of our lives in endless medical visits, I embarked on a journey of self-empowerment through Ayurvedic teachings. My ancestral lineage unfolded as I was reminded of the rich heritage of Ayurveda ingrained in my family. Ayurveda was deeply woven into my early childhood, as I was born into a household where Ayurvedic practices and traditional lifestyles were the norm in my birthplace of Trinidad. I felt compelled to embrace my dharma (duty) as an Ayurvedic Practitioner and wondered if people who were in search of complementary medicine knew about Ayurveda. Through comprehensive training and certifications, including Health Coaching, Clinical Ayurvedic Specialist (with a focus on disease management and herbs), Ayurvedic Body Therapies and on my path to complete my Doctorate and PhD in Natural Medicine, I have dedicated myself to supporting individuals grappling with loss, reproductive challenges, hormonal imbalances, and overall health struggles. As for my three sons, we make beautiful memories with family adventures as we spend our time traveling, hiking, swimming and riding our bicycles. The nurturing mother in me offers compassion with a sense of humor and fun for children in need of complementary support for their health. Moreover, being on the Board of Directors for the Minnesota Ayurveda Association and drawing upon over 15 years of experience in education, I craft tailored Wellness programs that promote holistic well-being within communities and families. Enriched by my experiences and eager to extend a helping hand, I invite you to explore how I can contribute to your journey toward wellness.
As an Ayurvedic Practitioner, it’s vital to grasp the essence of doshas in Ayurveda. Doshas, the elemental energies governing body and mind functions, are a fundamental aspect of this holistic system. The three doshas—Vata (comprising air and ether elements), Pitta (consisting of fire and water elements), and Kapha (made up of earth and water elements)—serve as the pillars of health and well-being. They lay the foundation for a healthy, disease-free life in their harmonious equilibrium. However, when these doshas lose balance, they are regarded as the primary instigators of ailments in Ayurveda. Each element uniquely regulates vital physiological and psychological functions, a knowledge cornerstone for ayurvedic practitioners.
As an Ayurvedic Practitioner, understanding Voice Dialogue is valuable. This approach, rooted in the Aware Ego and Psychology of Selves, delves into the intricate layers of our inner selves, each bearing unique energies that impact our choices and well-being. While these Selves serve as protective mechanisms for survival, over-activation can lead to energy depletion and illness. Voice Dialogue seamlessly aligns with Ayurvedic therapy by exploring these layers and bringing discomforted Selves to the surface. By harmonizing with the body’s innate healing wisdom, Voice Dialogue facilitation, in collaboration with Ayurveda, empowers clients to restore balance and well-being, nurturing both body and mind.
